Who will take over as prime minister of the UK?

After the Conservative Party leadership contest was reduced to the top two contenders on Wednesday, Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss will take over as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Following a string of scandals that resulted in the resignation of dozens of ministers, Johnson resigned as the party's leader earlier this month.

Over the course of five voting rounds, members of parliament reduced the ten Conservative candidates running to just two.

In the end, Penny Mordaunt finished in last place with 105 votes, losing to Sunak who received 137 votes and Truss who received 113.

"I'm appreciative that my coworkers have confidence in me today. I'll put in 24-hour shifts to spread our message across the nation "Sunak tweeted.

As for Truss, she tweeted: "I appreciate your confidence in me. I'm prepared to start working right away."

Now that 160,000 party activists have had their say, the winner — and subsequent prime minister — will be declared in September.

Johnson's administration employed both of the candidates that advanced to the final two in the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party.

With the UK experiencing a crisis in the cost of living and the Conservative Party losing support after 12 years in power, the task facing the final two contenders is challenging enough.
